Competition
One of tango's most prestigious international competitions. Dancers from over 60 countries compete across preliminary rounds in Europe, culminating in the Grand Final at TangoToIstanbul.
How It Works
The T2i World Cup spans multiple cities. Couples register for a Preliminary round in their region. Top performers advance to the Istanbul Grand Final, where international judges evaluate technique, musicality, and connection.
Regional qualifiers held in partner cities across Europe and beyond. Couples compete for a place at the Grand Final in Istanbul.
The pinnacle of the competition. Held during TangoToIstanbul in March, with an international panel of judges and a live audience.
Two main divisions — Tango de Pista (salon style) and Tango Escenario (stage tango) — with age-group sub-categories.
The System
The T2i World Cup is organized into four tiers — each offering different levels of competition intensity, ranking points, and qualification pathways.
The pinnacle of the T2i system. Held once a year in March in Istanbul, the World CUP awards the maximum ranking points and crowns the season's world champions.
Multi-day events featuring 5–6 renowned maestros and orchestras. A jury of at least seven members adjudicates — winners earn a direct place at the T2i World CUP finals.
National-level events hosting a minimum of 2–3 internationally recognised maestros. Top finishers advance directly to the World CUP semi-finals.
The entry point to the T2i circuit. No maestro restrictions apply, though no more than two jury members may share the same nationality. Winners advance from the quarter-finals.
15 Disciplines
Classic Argentine tango in salon embrace at a professional level. Ronda format with a randomly assigned song in the final — pure technique and musicality under pressure.
Pure social tango in close embrace — judged on authentic connection, musicality, and floor craft as danced in the milonga. No stage performance, just the real thing.
For dancers stepping up to the professional circuit — experienced enough to stand out, still building their competitive careers. The next generation of great tango.
Celebrating tango at its most mature. Elegance, experience, and the depth of connection built over a lifetime of dancing — where age is an undeniable advantage.
Theatrical stage tango where couples perform their own choreography. Lifts, acrobatics, and stage movement are permitted — creativity, artistry, and risk are the currency here.
Contemporary tango exploring the open embrace and expanded movement vocabulary. Influenced by modern improvisation, nuevo celebrates tango's ongoing evolution beyond tradition.
Tango danced to waltz rhythm — flowing, circular, and suspended. A unique style that blends the 3/4 time signature with the tango embrace, favouring sweep and lyrical phrasing.
Fast, playful, and rhythmically driven. Traspié footwork and sharp weight transfers make milonga tango at its most energetic and joyful — smiles strongly encouraged.
A tribute to the "King of the Beat." Juan D'Arienzo's sharp, driving rhythm demands precise footwork and assertive dancing. Couples are chosen by the music — not the other way around.
Honouring the smooth, elegant sound of Carlos Di Sarli — long legato phrases, refined salon style, and melodic sensitivity. A category for those who dance with their whole soul.
The dramatic tension and deep emotion of Osvaldo Pugliese require full artistic commitment. La Yumba's signature pauses and surges separate those who feel it from those who don't.
Celebrating the warm, sentimental richness of Aníbal Troilo — the poet of the bandoneón. Lyrical phrasing and heartfelt musicality are at the heart of this category.
Both partners may freely lead and follow throughout the performance. A progressive category celebrating connection and creativity beyond traditional role boundaries.
A spectacular stage performance where groups create and perform their own tango choreography. Maximum 4 minutes — every second on stage must count.
Solo dancers perform an improvised tango sequence holding the barre. Ornamentation, musicality, and creative expression take centre stage — the barre is the partner, the music is the guide.
